Quality Assurance
My workflow is organized following specific steps provided for by SR EN 15038, the European quality standard for translation services:
  • for larger projects, create a glossary, unless the customer provides their own glossary
  • send this glossary to the client, in case they or their final client would like to review it
  • search also for reliable reference materials in the source language
  • depending on the nature of the document, discuss with the client the degree of adaptation the text might require (linguistic, cultural, technical and geographical conventions)
  • translate the document and then perform an own check
  • subject to the client's approval, send the translated document to a fellow freelancer for revision
  • if the document contains complex terminology, have it reviewed by an expert in the field
  • send the translated document to the client for proofreading
  • if the client has some remarks concerning this first version, implement the required changes in a final version
  • send the final version to the client
After so many years of experience I learned that the most important thing in this business is translation quality. There are many quality assurance methods available and several levels of checking are just one of them, but I also use others, such as SDL Trados features (QA Checker, Terminology Verifier and others).
